Thought for the week
I have been thinking about how the angels appeared to shepherds in the fields outside Bethlehem watching their sheep, to tell them the good news about Jesus’ birth. Why shepherds? Bethlehem was a town. Other people lived there too, and there were plenty of guests in town for the census. Why didn’t the angels sing in the town square and rouse everyone to come and adore the baby? I wonder if it has something to do with this being David’s town – David was a shepherd long before he became king of Israel. And Jesus is our shepherd as well as our king.
“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me – just as the Father knows me and I know the Father – and I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.”
