Giving: FAQ

Why should I give to DCBC?

Giving to a church is more than just putting some money into the offering bag. Giving recognises God’s sovereignty, and it’s a step of faith. When you give you are recognizing God’s ownership of all things as did David when he prayed;

“Yours, O LORD, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty. Everything in the heavens and on earth is yours, O Lord, and this is your kingdom. We adore you as the one who is over all things. Wealth and honor come from you alone, for you rule over everything. Power and might are in your hand, and at your discretion people are made great and given strength. O our God, we thank you and praise your glorious name!” 1 Chronicles 29:11-13.

At the same time you are taking a step of faith, giving first to God and trusting that he will provide for your needs.

Can I give without a donation number?

Yes.  However, DCBC is a registered charity, which means you can apply for a 33.3% rebate from IRD if you have a taxable income.

To apply for a rebate you will need a receipt from DCBC at the end of the financial year. To facilitate this process we need to give you a donation number, so the church treasurer can keep a confidential record of your donations. You will need to make sure the number is included with all your donations; either as a reference on internet payments or on an envelope with any cash donations given. Apply for a donations receipt number here.

How do I make my donation increase by 50% without it costing me anything?

Consider giving your tax rebate once you’ve claimed it at the end of the financial year. This is money you’ve already given, so why not give the government’s tax rebate as well? If you do this each year, then 50% more than what you’ve initially given will go to the church. That’s because you’ll give the 33.33% tax rebate then you’ll get a rebate on that which you will give again, then next year another 33.33% rebate on that rebate etc.

How do I give by automatic payment?

Follow the instructions on giving. C
ontact us if you have any problems.

Can I give by credit card (or EFTPOS)?

Unfortunately, we do not have the option to give through EFTPOS, as many people prefer to use other electronic methods of giving.

What if I want to give during the service and have my donation recorded against my offering number?

Place your offering in an envelope, and write your offering number on the outside of an envelope (available from the church if required). Place it in the offering bag as it goes by during the service.

How do I participate in the offering during the service if I give electronically?

Many people give to DCBC electronically, rather than through the weekly offering. We suggest those people take a moment to reflect on God's blessings as the offering bag comes past.

Does DCBC have any appeals for money other than those above?

We have two annual appeals. The first appeal is for mission beyond our borders – advancing God’s Kingdom in other parts of the world. The second appeal, in spring, is the First Fruits appeal. This money is used for our mission here in Dunedin. Very occasionally other appeals are held, such as the Tsunami Appeal in January 2006.
